What is Junjou Romantica?
Junjou Romantica is an on-going BL series written by Nakamura Shungiku which is currently being published in the magazine Tres Tres. It contains three different couples in three different arcs: Junjou Romantica: the main couple Usami and Misaki, Junjou Egoist: Hiroki and Nowaki, and Junjou Terrorist: Professor Miyagi and Shinobu. They are collected and published together under the name Junjou Romanica in tankoubon form.
Who are Nowaki and his Hiro-san?
Kamijou Hiroki is the childhood friend of Usami Akihiko from the main Junjou Romantica series. He was originally in love with Usami, but Usami did not return his feelings. One day, he meets Nowaki in a park when a rocket Nowaki launches nearly hits him, and Nowaki accidentally happens to witness him crying over Usami. Nowaki, who is an orphan that was raised on public charity and a selfless, altruistic individual, has never desired anything in his life - that is, until he meets Hiro-san. The rest, they say, is history.
What is their relationship?
Since Junjou is actually a yaoi series, Hiro and Nowaki are in a canon romantic relationship. If you want to appreciate their "friendship," that's fine, but Junjou doesn't have much grey area. If anything, their relationship has proved that they are or they aren't, and they need each other too desperately to ever just be friends.
In terms of the actual relationship, Nowaki is bold and affectionate, and desperately eager to prove himself as an equal in his Hiro-san's eyes. Hiroki, on the other hand, is more withdrawn and stingy with his affection. A loner at heart, Hiroki has trouble showing how he really feels, but Nowaki is exceptionally good at reading between the lines, much to Hiroki's annoyance and relief. Their relationship is sweet because of how much they care for each other, despite Hiroki's temper and spastic tantrums. But that's also what makes them fun and adorable together. They have their ups and downs, which makes them, in my eyes, the most believable relatable couple in the series. They're a truly loving, sweet, and stupid couple.
Why The Perfect Storm?
Nowaki was born during a storm, and his name means "typhoon" in Japanese. More often than once, Hiroki references the fact that Nowaki's name suits his personality - powerful, moving, and ready to turn over everything in its path. When Hiroki was trying to break up with Nowaki, he also mentions how Nowaki continuously sweeps him up and draw him back in. Also, the name is very symbolic of their relationship - there are a lot of rough patches, but the fact they make it through them all is what makes them beautiful.
